Hello blog readers, my name’s Nick. I’m currently in my second year of a BA in Politics and Economics, and the ‘design guy’ on the ECOMS Committee. I like to spend a lot of my time down at the Business School, not just because it’s one of the prettiest places to study on campus, but because the Business Faculty is so proactive about giving students incredible opportunities! They (and ECOMS) have teamed up with Mannkal to get students from UWA to go on amazing journeys across the globe that also look great on a CV.
To say that I’m a fan of the Mannkal Economic Education Foundation might be an understatement. The Subiaco based think tank has provided dozens of WA students the opportunity and the means to intern in other think tanks in locations as varied as Hong Kong, London, Calgary and Melbourne.
They aren’t just in the business of sending students on working holidays; they have a vision for the future that recognises the important role of students today in shaping our state and the world. Their goal is to expose students to the ideas of liberalism and individual freedom that they so rarely encounter at University.

It’s that time of year again, when the campus once again jolts back to life and the grounds and buildings are flooded with bright-eyed undergraduates, ready to tackle a new semester. While many students are returning to continue their studies, it is a particularly exciting, and sometimes stressful time, for our new students. University is very different to high school, both in teaching style and the level of independence, so it can come as a shock to students. When making a successful transition it helps to be prepared, so I’ve put together a list of my top tips to give students a flying start.
Orientation – O-Week is the biggest bi-annual event held on campus each year, with a week’s worth of events, information sessions and enrolment assistance. Check the UniStart website for further details of what’s on and check your Orientation schedule. I would highly recommend that all new students take part in the Orientation activities on offer, as they give a good overview of the expectations of university life. On top of the fun activities you can enjoy, the week also gives you a chance to meet people you can approach for help during your time at UWA.

It’s the end of the year – hurray!
We’ve had a fantastic year with some outstanding achievements by our students and academics, but also a very eventful year – I’m certainly looking forward to my holiday break!
While it’s been a busy 12 months, we’ve also had time for some fun… so here are some of my (personal) highlights from 2015…

When discussing the topic of leadership, one of the first questions many people ask is ‘what makes an effective leader?’ This is a difficult question to answer in just one blog post, as high quality leadership requires such a multifaceted approach. Instead, I thought I would share some insights to my leadership journey and the most valuable lessons I have learnt along the way.
So what has shaped my leadership journey to this point? Firstly, I have been fortunate to have studied and worked in some very successful institutions, in both academia and industry. To give just two examples, I worked for many years at Macquarie Bank, a very successful, global financial institution, and I undertook my PhD at Stanford University, where I was very fortunate to have a Nobel Prize-winner as my supervisor. In both cases, I was able to observe what a difference highly effective leadership is able to make.

Hello everyone, and welcome to my first Dean’s blog! The Business School has a number of great initiatives coming up this year, some of which are already underway.
Our first cohort of MBA Full Time students has arrived, and they are already hard to work in their intensive, 12 month program. They come from a wide range of backgrounds and are all looking to advance, and in some cases change the direction of, their careers.
The School is launching two new postgraduate programs this year: the Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and the Master of Applied Finance. The GCEI offers experienced professionals and business owners the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge to become an entrepreneurial manager of either a new or established business, and students will learn how to deal with uncertainty, manage innovation and improve the business through the application of best practice methods of small business management and new product development.
