Choosing to enter the UWA Business School (UWABS) was a no brainer for me. My best performing subjects at school were economics and accounting and my mother was an oil & gas entrepreneur, so it was a natural choice for me to enter the world of commerce and there was no finer business school than at UWA.

My time at UWABS was not without its challenges – along with any difficulties someone in their late teens struggles with, I chopped and changed my majors and ended up pursuing a double major in Marketing and Management.

In 2009, armed only with my UWA degree, a few hundred dollars, and a ton of sheer determination, I headed to where the very best in their field come to turn their dreams and ideas in to big business – London.

I had no job lined up, no friends, no family, and nowhere to stay. It was the security of my UWABS degree with its international recognition as a world-class teaching institution that provided me with the confidence I needed to persevere.

The gold price crash of 2013 was a dramatic wakeup call to many of the resource sectors prolific gold miners. Their ride of historically high prices had come to a sudden halt and the need to trim the fat (so to speak) had become the number one priority. While the term ‘cost reduction’ was nothing new to my vocabulary, I had never seemed to take a full appreciation of the term – that is until, I was part of a wider team entrusted to pull my organisation back to profitability. After months of working alongside business improvement teams and external consultants, I began to develop a keen interest in how business’s solved complex problems, especially in difficult economic conditions. This interest (and a little inspiration from some consultants) is what led me to the UWA MBA program.

Now, due to some previous study, I elected to pursue UWA’s MBA Flexible program on a full time basis. The flexible programs greatest appeal was that it offered a range of leadership and resource focused units. This allowed me to tailor my MBA to the area of greatest value to me and also helped me to keep in touch with the industry. Another key appeal was the abundance of scholarships. For someone who has left their job and has no steady stream of income, you could understand my enthusiasm towards this.

My name is Sam Jarman and I am in my first year of my Masters in Marketing at the University of Western Australia. After I completed my Undergraduate Arts Degree in Communications & Media and English & Cultural Studies at UWA, I spent the following year undertaking first hand experience in a marketing role at a land development company. After pursuing this for a year, I began to realise that I was lacking in some of the key marketing principles. I stand by this decision wholeheartedly, as although I am only just completing my first semester of my Masters degree at the UWA Business School, the information I have gained has been extremely useful in my work life

At present, I am working two jobs while studying full time – a bit of a hand full I know. Over the past semester I have learnt a lot from my time at university, and have since developed my own study techniques to keep a healthy balance between work, study and social life.

Halyey Baker - UWA Business School Student

My name is Hayley Baker, and I am in my final year of a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Economics and Finance at UWA. Last semester, I was lucky enough to be accepted into the Study Exchange program.

In hindsight, going on exchange was something I always said I would do, but never really spent much time actively working towards. It was only on a sudden realisation at the end of my third semester that if I didn’t make it happen now, I never would. I submitted my application, and four months later I was on my way to the University of St. Gallen (HSG) in Switzerland.

I put St. Gallen as my first choice because of the variety of English units offered and the proximity to the rest of Europe for travel, but I didn’t realise how good my choice of Host University was until I arrived – HSG is ranked as the fourth best Business School in Europe and attracts students from all over the world. I was able to take core units that counted towards my majors and learn a little German as part of my broadening requirements. I also undertook three elective units related to strategy and consulting, an area I am very interested in and passionate about.

Hello, my name is Kenny Ng and I graduated from the University of Western Australia (UWA) Business School with First Class Honours in Economics in 2014. I remembered that when I was young, I grew up devouring nonfiction books about travel. The different cultures, ways of life and types of people fascinated me to no end – both because they were so different from what I knew, and because I learnt there was a whole world out there for me to discover and explore, it’s just as the saying goes: ‘The world is your oyster’. This was also the main reason why I decided to head over to UWA to further my tertiary education after serving two years of National Service with the Singapore Armed Forces.

When I first arrived in Perth, anxiety, a sense of worry about fitting in was constantly on my mind. But my worries were dispelled when I encountered the vibrant campus with countless other students that came from various countries and backgrounds – everyone was so welcoming and friendly. Looking back now, I have definitely had some pretty great moments during my four years in UWA. From an AIESEC teaching internship in Brasov, Romania, to a student-exchange programme at Copenhagen Business School, I gained so much – life lessons; newfound friends, amazing travel experiences, and in turn, have changed too.
