Morning Startup is a great excuse for any budding entrepreneur to get a taste of what’s happening in the Perth startup ecosystem, meet other people in the space, and perhaps most of all, test their alarm clocks! Kicking off at 7.30 am sharp, every second Wednesday at Spacecubed, fills up with bleary eyed business owners, entrepreneurs, students and anyone interested in the up and coming tech, tactics and methods which are crucial in running a modern business. This meetup group has hosted a range of great speakers from local business owners to international success stories, all who come to share their knowledge, and experiences with a keen (even if sleepy!) crowd.

Getting the opportunity to meet other members in the Bloom space is always a great experience, however when this turns into an opportunity to hear the story of someone who has created, and exited from, a successful company with a social focus, and who has even wilder ambitions in the near future, this is an opportunity that is not to be missed.

Before going to this talk, I never really understood how Darren was the one person who managed landed the role of Bloom’s CEO – leading the next generation of entrepreneurs out of UWA. He was always easy to talk to and interested in what we were doing, however I didn’t understand his role in the entrepreneurial sphere. That was until he told his story.

Every business needs a plan, right? For most businesses, the first thing you do is write a formal plan. 15+ pages and a week later you have your idea, business model, target market and projected income. And a big stack of papers.

But as a startup, how do you write a plan when you don’t quite know all of the aspects of your business? What if you don’t even know what your business even does?

It was a balmy and peaceful Friday night in March – for most of WA. For members of the Bloom Startup Launchpad unit however, it was a different story – it was pitch night and the nerves were starting to set in. The Bloom Startup Launchpad is a unit run through the Business school, where students are able to take their business idea, be it a small business or a startup, and have the chance to work on it for academic credit. Many of the students had never pitched in a setting like this before, however this didn’t seem to phase any of them. In fact, these guys were awesome.
